Events and Opportunities at the Ramaz School

February 7th - Ramaz Upper School

February 7th will feature a joint presentation with the Ramaz Upper School History department linking curricular jewish themes to classical music of the era. The presentation will examine the emergence of Romanticism out of the classical period, focusing on Mendelssohn as an important link. Mendelssohn’s background as a Protestant man with Jewish heritage will also be an interesting aspect of the presentation, which will provide a segue to Wagner as full blown Romanticism. Philip Fisher will perform Liszt’s incredible transcription of the Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde.

February 27th - Tali Rubinstein Presentation

As middle school students are about to start their instrumental instruction on the recorder, the administration and music faculty wanted to present the students with a Tali Rubinstein, a master recorder player who can introduce the students to the instrument as a serious classical music force. Tali Rubinstein, an Israeli recorder virtuoso who has been active in New York for several years, has been featured by the Carnegie Hall music education and is well versed in the Classical and Jewish/Israeli repertoire.

March 17th - Concert Excursion at Carnegie Hall

Let by Jewish-American conductor Michal Tilson Thomas, the San Francisco Symphony presents a program featuring new music (Adams), popular music (Saint Saëns) and exciting music (Stravinsky). It is a great opportunity for Ramaz students to visit Carnegie Hall. This will be an after school “opt in” event, with an optional pre-concert dinner and talk.

Program:
